Report for March - October 2005

DEVELOPING SCHOOLS ORIENTEERING

1. Increase awareness and understanding of orienteering in education
• Ongoing liaison with Green Park Outdoor Centre, Bucks following remapping, to revamp their orienteering activities for visiting school groups.
• Advice given re delivering insets to new W Berks P.E. Primary Coordinator.
• Produced maps, organised the activity, recruited club members from SOC, SN and BKO to run a whole day orienteering taster session at the Hampshire Youth Games.
• Attended a meeting to express interest in including orienteering as a sport at the first Berkshire Youth Games in 2006. Invitation to attend as a demo sport likely to be confirmed.
• Forwarded details of orienteering development work in local schools, to Tony Vickers, West Berks Councillor (BADO and ex vice-chair) following an enquiry from him to BOF seeking examples of good practice.
• Meeting with Karen Williams and Sue Bett to discuss progression of development in Hants and exchange info/ contact details.
• Arranged a BOF Level 1 Coaching Course in response to local requests.
• Added to info/resources on CDs for distribution at insets and BOF coaching courses

2. Enable teachers to develop orienteering in schools
• Mapped school site for Inset, and delivered Inset training at Cholsey Primary School, Wallingford for 8 teachers within the cluster.
• Responded to enquiries on starting orienteering in school from Radley College, Oxfordshire; and Chandlers Ford, Hants.
• Site visit to Westfields School, Yateley to advise on starting orienteering. Further liaison with Sue Bett, SN, Community Sports Coach, to arrange mapping and a follow up whole day orienteering session.
• Met teacher from Dolphin Montessori School, nr Wokingham to advise on orienteering resources.
• Assisted in delivery of whole school inset session to Hungerford Primary School.
• Produced 2 separate simple OCAD guides for teachers: one on course drawing and another one on using OCAD to produce a simple map. Distributed to a large number of teachers/other RDOs.
• Visited site, advised on mapping then arranged/liaised with mapper for Elstree Prep School, Woolhampton..
• Produced resources for and delivered 2 Inset sessions for 24 Primary teachers, and 1 inset session for Secondary PE teachers for Bracknell Forest Council.
• Liaised with TVOC mapper to map and supply info to Dr Challoner’s High School, Bucks.
• Met Margaret Stevens, Lord Williams College, Thame, S Oxfordshire PDM re introducing orienteering to 29 Primary Schools + 5 Secondary schools. Advice given on funding/resources. Insets arranged for 2006.

3. Support the development of inter-school events and competitions
• Attended further WOC 2005 meeting re YOFs and Battersea final.
• Answered various enquiries from schools relating to Battersea schools event
• Liaised with Helen Errington over content of Schools Final Details for Battersea event
• Further talks with W Berks SSCos re festivals between their primary schools. First festival arranged for October 2005
• Further research on format/organisation of School Sprint Festivals.
• Passed on info/encouraged all SCOA clubs to enter regional YBT event. Provided advice/liaison between event organiser and clubs. Contacted all known schools who might be interested in entering.
• Met Chris Vaal, Bracknell Forest Council’s Leisure Development Manager to organise inaugural off-site primary schools festival, utilising assistance from secondary school JSLA pupils

.4. Support the work of the British Schools Orienteering Association
• Completed update of SCOA BSOA contacts database.
• Continued to distribute BSOA info at all teachers insets, training, and school visits.
• Supplied info and liaised with Peter Bylett to arrange a BSOA package of membership and equipment purchase for 20 schools in Bracknell Forest Council.

SUPPORT FOR SCHOOL – CLUB LINKS

1. Support clubs to make links with local School Sports Partnerships
• Arranged for BKO members to assist at first off site session for Broadmoor Primary School, Crowthorne.
• Provided liaison between Brakenhale School, Bracknell, and club members to assist them with a Year 9 Activities day.
• Liaised with SOC to set up meeting re possible project in S. Hants. Meeting now arranged between RDO, SOC, and Matt Lane, PDM, Fareham
• Meeting arranged with Southampton SDO, Southampton PDM, SOC and RDO to develop schools orienteering in So/ton.
• Initial requests made to TVOC to support S Oxfordshire schools project by providing school mappers. Researched source of base maps to enable this to proceed.
• Liaised between SOC and Portsmouth SDO to offer an Orienteering taster at S Hants Sports Day in October

2. Support clubs to develop programmes which encourage young people to take part in orienteering out of school
• Attended/ assisted at SN CATI at St John’s Lye, in lead up to WOC 2005
• Provided BOF Level 1 assessment to enable Julia Robson (BADO) to run an orienteering club for Hook Primary School
• Provided information re available coaching courses to interested club members in BKO and SOC areas.
• Promoted SN and BKO Schools League/Saturday Series to local schools.

3. Support clubs which are working towards Clubmark accreditation
• Answered ongoing enquiries, and passed on info re SCuk coaching courses to SOC.
• Passed on details of SCuk courses to BKO members.
• Continued support for SN’s application.

PROMOTING EQUITY IN PARTICIPATION

• Arranged mapping of Mellow Farm, Dockenfield – SN area – in advance of installation of a small POC for use with visiting camping groups (mainly scouts/youth groups)
• Ran an orienteering session for Church Crookham Cubs, Fleet, Hants.
• Continued liaison with Pauline Olivant re development of the Orienteering bolt-on module for JSLA Award.
• Met with BADO members for a recce, then reported back to Paul Hendry, W Berks Countryside Manager re council mapping and development of new POCs. Sites identified, funding agreed, mapping now proceeding, with a view to encouraging greater use of and access to the countryside for all users .Referred to Equal Access to Countryside Scrutiny Project. Possible link to Ramblers/Health Walks.
• Sent details of coaching course to Purley Scouts leaders.

ADMINISTRATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

• Ongoing liaison with other RDOs/Development Managers
• Attended SCOA AGM in June to report on RDO actions .
• Ongoing liaison with Karen Williams re her development work in N. Hants.
• Attended 2 day meeting of BOF RDOs in Nottingham.
• Articles written for club magazines and SCOA website
• Info to Sport England SE for their database.
• Info sent to Hants –club contact information for their year book.
• Time sheet/expenses management/ preparation for RDO meetings.
• Produced 6 monthly report March - Sep 2005
• Responded to numerous email / phone calls for info/advice.
• Produced further resources etc to enhance job delivery.

OTHER

• Wrote the initial Expressions of Interest for West Berks application for a Community . Sports Coach.
• Wrote articles/ provided photos for RC5, summer edition
• Wrote letter of support for final phase of W Berks CSC application.
• Responded to request to find a coach for a Holiday Fellowship orienteering ‘holiday’ on the IOW.
• Passed on details of possible local places of holiday employment/work experience to Tessa Hill ( HOC).
