Emily Benham (WIM), formerly of Sarum OC, became World Champion today at the World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships in Portugal. Emily took the gold in the Sprint race in a time of 17:17, 2 seconds ahead of Marika Hara of Finland in second place and 42 seconds ahead of Henna Saarinen, also of Finland, in third place.
Emily started one minute after last year's winner, Martina Tichovska of the Czech Republic, but had her in sight almost continuosly from the fourth control, finally passing her on the sprint to the finish. Although Marika Hara was 20 seconds ahead of Emily at the half-way intermediate control, Emily had a cleaner second half of the course to take the victory.
Emily has previously won 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals at MTBO World Championships as well as being the World Cup winner in 2014 and 2015. Emily is a former recipient of SCOA grant-aid funding for aspiring junior international orienteers.
